Alexia Santiago

Alexia Santiago: Volunteer for the GHRO Your Future and Chica Sports & Fitness Programs

"Volunteering with Femergy® has been an incredible experience. It has allowed me to reconnect with students and support young girls in meaningful ways. Missing the classroom was a huge driver for me to seek out a volunteer opportunity.

"Femergy®'s mission to equip girls and women with the tools, skills, and resources necessary to overcome gender barriers resonates deeply with me, especially as a woman of color. By participating in their programs, I have had the opportunity to be a part of a community of support to students and give back to my younger self, who could have greatly benefited from more mentorship.

"The holistic approach Femergy® takes in education, leadership, health, and wellness is truly inspiring and aligned with my values. It has been a privilege to witness the growth and empowerment of these young girls as they explore and celebrate their strengths and voices.

"Spending Saturdays with the girls has enriched my own life and brings me so much joy. I am grateful for the chance to be part of such a compassionate and dedicated organization as well as be a small part of so many journeys and bright futures!"

Q + A With Miss Alexia

  1. How did you get involved as a volunteer?

"I was looking for a way to stay connected to students in the area after transitioning into a role that removed me from direct service in a classroom. In a past role, my executive director at the time introduced me to Maylin and we had a chat. I remembered the organization later and our discussion and with more time on my hands volunteered for Chica Sports camp as my first volunteer commitment. I enjoyed it so much but wished I had more time with students so decided to volunteer as a coach for the following year!"

  2. What motivates you to continue volunteering?

"What keeps me motivated is seeing the girls' motivations! Watching their interactions with various program days and the way they show up willing to try new things. They also are giving time on their weekend for growth and development and I find that to be inspiring. I would have benefited from programming such as Femergy® especially during my middle and high school years and want to help share some encouragement and be a thoughtful adult who listens. Knowing how hard that time period was, I want to offer my support."

  3. What benefits have you experienced for volunteering, or how has volunteering changed your life?

"It has made me become better in my personal and professional life. In the world of education and non-profit work, volunteering helps me stay connected to my why and keeps me grounded in serving young people."

  4. What would you say to someone else to encourage them to get involved?

"I would say that they would not want to miss the opportunity to meet some inspiring, hilarious and thought young girls who are on a path of becoming life long learners. So often I leave feeling encouraged and energized from being around such thoughtful young people. Being connected through community is powerful tool for adults and young people! So join the village!"
